Deadpool 3 has experienced a bumpy road on its way to the big screen. Originally set for September 2024, it got pushed back to November before being moved up to May 2024. Another delay meant it is now expected in July 2024. Filming took place from May to July 2023 but was temporarily halted due to industry strikes. Nevertheless, fans are thrilled to have confirmation that the beloved Ryan Reynolds anti-hero will return alongside newcomer to the franchise, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.
Release Date and Delays
Deadpool 3 was initially announced in 2019 after Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox. The threequel was originally penciled in for a September 6, 2024 release. However, it got delayed until November 8, 2024 in March 2021. In April 2022, Disney moved the film forward to May 3, 2024. But in August 2022, another shift resulted in the current July 26, 2024 date.
The movie was filmed from May to July 2023 in Vancouver, Canada. However, production was suspended for two weeks in June due to the Hollywood writers’ and actors’ strikes. Cast and Crew
Deadpool 3 sees Ryan Reynolds return in the titular role of Wade Wilson/Deadpool. Also reprising her role is Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, Deadpool’s love interest.
But the biggest casting news is the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. Jackman previously stated Logan would be his last outing as the iconic clawed mutant. But the prospect of sharing the screen with Reynolds’ Deadpool clearly appealed to him. Their hilarious dynamic is highly anticipated by fans.
Behind the camera, Shawn Levy directs, taking over from David Leitch. Levy is best known for Stranger Things but also worked with Reynolds on Free Guy. Plot details are mostly unknown but the movie promises to deliver more fourth wall-breaking, self-referential humor that the character is loved for.
Specifics around the plot of Deadpool 3 remain largely under wraps. Writer Rhett Reese has described it as a “fish-out-of-water” film that explores how Deadpool fits into the very sane world of the MCU. Given Deadpool’s penchant for graphic violence and vulgar humor, this will make for an intriguing dynamic.
Leaked set photos have fueled rumors that the movie will involve time travel and feature Deadpool teaming up with a resurrected Wolverine. The images show retro costumes suggesting the mutants end up traveling through time and interacting with earlier eras of the MCU. As both characters have regenerative healing abilities, they are ideally suited for time hopping action.

The Deadpool franchise has always carried an R rating and the third movie will be no exception. Allowing Reynolds free rein to go all out with mature language, violence, and sexual references has proven a smash hit with audiences. And early indications suggest Deadpool 3 will push boundaries even further.
Reports from test screenings point to extremely gory sequences that fully earn the R rating. But fans of the franchise will see this as reassuring news that the creative team is holding nothing back for this highly anticipated reunion.
