Recent Released: Gate Season 3 Release Date and Latest Updates
When we last saw Riley in “Inside Out,” she had just moved with her family from Minnesota to San Francisco, with her emotions guiding her through this major life transition. By the film’s end, Joy and Sadness had learned to cooperate in Headquarters, the central hub where Riley’s memories and personality islands are maintained.
As Riley turns 13 in the sequel, Headquarters and her islands face an upheaval to make room for new adolescent emotions. The film’s official synopsis reveals that Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust are “not prepared for the demolition of Headquarters and other surprises that thirteen brings.” So what exactly will be in store for Riley’s emotions this time around?
Plot and New Emotions
“Inside Out 3” is expected to explore the inner turmoil that comes with the transition from childhood to adulthood. The pre-teen and early teen years bring many physical and emotional changes that can be difficult to navigate.
Director Kelsey Mann explained, “We thought it was the perfect time to revisit Riley and see how life is treating a teenager. This sequel will showcase Riley in all her awkward glory as she adjusts to a changing body, new emotions and her first crush.”
A key part of that adjustment will be the emergence of new emotions. Two additional emotions have been confirmed for the sequel so far:
Anxiety: Voiced by Maya Hawke, this new emotion manifests worries and nervousness about changes happening in Riley’s life.
Pride: The casting for this emotion has not yet been announced. As Riley starts seeking more independence and responsibility, Pride helps her accomplish goals and feel self-assured.
It’s likely that other new emotions will appear as well to manage specific challenges Riley faces growing up, perhaps including hormones, peer pressure and more mature relationships.
The old emotions will need to adapt to these newcomers and coordinate effectively with them, which is sure to cause some humorous conflicts within Headquarters along the way.
Voice Cast Reprises Roles
Fans will be thrilled to hear that the entire original voice cast is returning for “Inside Out 3,” lending consistency and chemistry:
- Amy Poehler as Joy
- Phyllis Smith as Sadness
- Lewis Black as Anger
- Tony Hale as Fear
- Liza Lapira as Disgust
Producer Mark Nielsen said, “This gifted cast breathes so much humor and heart into these characters. We’re lucky to have their talents bringing Riley’s mind to life once again.”
In particular, it will be both comedic and emotional to see Joy and Sadness’ friendship continue to grow. Their willingness to understand each other was key to Riley’s happiness at the end of the first film. Now they’ll have to help the other three original emotions accept Anxiety, Pride and any other newcomers.
In addition to the returning voice cast, “Inside Out” leadership is also reuniting for the sequel:
- Director: Kelsey Mann
- Producer: Mark Nielsen
- Screenplay: Meg LeFauve
Mann and Nielsen worked under writer/director Pete Docter on “Inside Out.” Now promoted to directing and producing roles, respectively, their guidance will ensure the sequel stays true to the spirit and quality of the original. Meanwhile, LeFauve is back to pen the script after co-writing the first movie.
